Ai Weiwei was born in Beijing in 1957 and had lived in the United States for 12 years.
Currently based in Beijing, his work focuses on social and cultural criticism through the use of architecture, art, video, and tweets.
In 2011. he was named the most powerful person in the art world by Art Review of the United States.
In 2007, he created a large-scale project "Fairy Tale" for the 12th German Kassel Document Exhibition and led 1001 Chinese tourists to the event.
In 2009, a “Citizen Survey” was launched on the Internet to convene a group of volunteers to investigate the list of students killed in the Wenchuan Earthquake. He had also produced documentary films such as "Mother's Hoof Flowers" online.
His works are widely exhibited around the world, including the Tate Modern Gallery in London and the Venice Biennale 2013.
