Wan Jianwei was born in Sichuan in 1958, he was decentralized in the later part of the Cultural Revolution before he joined the army.
In 1984, the work "Dear Mother" won the gold medal of the 6th National Art Exhibition, and he later entered the Oil Painting Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. During his early career, his paintings were experimental and he eventually focus more on multimedia art later on.
He has participated in a number of important exhibitions both domestically and abroad, such as the Documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennale, the Gwangju Biennale, the Sao Paulo Biennale, “Cities on the Move” and more.
He had held solo exhibitions at many art institutions at home and abroad, including the American Walker Art Center, Beijing Today Art Museum, and Shanghai Zendai Museum of Contemporary Art.
In 2013, he became the first commissioned artist of the Chinese Contemporary Art Project funded by the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation at the Guggenheim Museum.
1958年生於四川,文革晚期下放農村隨後參軍。
1984年作品《親愛的媽媽》獲第六屆全國美展金獎,後入浙江美術學院油畫系學習。早期的繪畫具有實驗性,之後轉向多媒體藝術。
曾參加國內國際的許多重要展覽,如卡塞爾文獻展、威尼斯雙年展、光州雙年展、聖保羅雙年展等、《移動中的城市》等。
在國內外許多藝術機構舉辦過個展,包括美國沃克藝術中心、北京今日美術館、上海證大當代美術館等。
2013年,成為古根漢美術館何鴻毅家族基金會資助的中國當代藝術計劃首位委約藝術家。
